Semester Progress

During this semester of English, I’ve learned many different, and vital things needed to know to be more successful in everyday life. English didn’t just teach me about writing, but it taught me to use the right words at the right time, which is very important to know.

In reading, I felt like I might have improved a bit. We’ve read a couple of books that had good storylines. Those books helped me realize that there are many lessons embedded in stories that I wouldn’t have expected. I’ve also started to read my own book that I got to pick out. I’ve only gotten about two thirds of it written, but I still really like the book.

For writing especially, I’ve felt like improved a lot. I’ve noticed over the semester that my writing has changed for the better. I’ve written many pieces, but my favorite has to be the creative writing piece. When writing, it felt like as I was thinking of the ideas, they were pouring onto the paper. That piece was definitely one of the better pieces I’ve done; at least in my mind it was.

Doing speeches in first semester English also benefited me drastically. I’m normally a shy person, and still am, but I’ve learned tactics from doing the speeches that help me. I’ve learned to be confident with myself and to know that everything is okay. From the speeches, I’ve also learned that public speaking isn’t as bad as I’ve always thought. When you have the right materials and practice, it’s pretty easy.

When it comes to thinking, I think I’ve improved on that too. I’ve learned to think outside of the box more and to think harder about things. When I say think harder about things, I mean not just think about fluff, but think harder and more in depth. Death of a salesman was one unit that really made me think hard and pushed me pretty well. That explains why I didn’t like that unit all that much.

All in all, first semester English has benefited me in more ways than it has hurt me. I’ve learned many important things in reading, writing, speaking, and thinking. Learning all of these things will later benefit me in the rest of my high school, and college careers.  These lessons will hopefully benefit me in the rest of my life too.
